Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty

The language faculty is a well-established faculty responsible for delivering French and German as core languages and Spanish as an option subject. Currently Italian and Language Leaders courses are being offered in the wider curriculum sessions on a Wednesday afternoon. Year 12 are also offered a ten-week night class in a foreign language of their choice (this is dependent on numbers). Over the last three years Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, French and German have been offered.

KS3
Most pupils study French and German in equal measure over the two years. They learn how to listen, speak, read and write in the foreign language through a variety of methods which suit learners of all abilities.

All students study at least one foreign language at KS4 - currently either French or German. They are able to choose a second foreign language, including Spanish, as a option subject.

All students complete the same course in term 1 of year 9 and then after careful consideration commence either a NVQ or GCSE course depending on their learning style.

KS4 - GCSE
Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing all are tested through controlled assessments and an examination. Students are entered for a paper depending on their aptitude and progress.
Foundation Paper (C - G Grade)
Higher Paper (A* - D)

KS4 - NVQ
This is a practical course in business language and assessed continuously with no final examination. Students can gain either a Level 1 or Level 2 (GCSE Grade B equivalent) qualification.

KS5
AS and A2 courses in French and German are currently offered. The ‘A’ level course shows clear progression from GCSE and students will learn how to express and justify their opinions on a range of current topic areas. They will build a greater understanding of grammar and structures and start to apply them in a relevant context. The course is supported by on-line materials which can be accessed by students at any time.

Please contact the department heads if you would like more information.
