Learning at home makes a vital contribution to student progress and provides opportunities to extend, support and complement learning at school.

Research and independent learning skills are becoming increasingly important to students in this information age within which we are living. These critical skills are also necessary in order to meet the demands of coursework in Key Stage 4 and beyond. Therefore we are changing the way that homework has been traditionally set for Year 7 and 8 students, in order to establish early, the skills that they will need to use throughout their studies.

This year we have launched Independent Learning Projects at Key Stage 3. Students will be set three projects per half term and will need to be organised and have good time management skills in order to ensure that they meet each of the project deadlines. Subjects will set their projects in line with the rota that has been published in students learning journals. Maths and Modern Foreign Languages will continue to set homework tasks on a weekly basis as the subject content needs constant reinforcement.

Teachers will set the Independent Projects in lesson time and full guidance will be available, discussions will take place about how to get started and where to look for information. All Independent Learning Projects will be available for students to access through the Schools Visual Learning Environment website. Students are encouraged to seek advice from their teacher if they are having difficulty with their project, or are finding that it is taking a much longer time than expected.

How can parents/carers help?

To help your son/daughter you can:

  • Provide them with a workspace at home
  • Help them to plan their time
  • Encourage them to establish good work patterns e.g. completing tasks soon after they get home
  • Put their learning journal to good use, add comments and sign it every week
  • Encourage them to use the facilities on offer at school e.g. library late nights
  • Take an interest in their work
  • Praise them when they have completed their projects
